Irlen Tinted Lenses

This non-evidence based treatment method is promoted by the Irlen Institute and other proponents who claim that up to 50% of individuals with dyslexia have a visual perceptual deficit known as Irlen Syndrome. Other names for Irlen Syndrome are: scotopic sensitivity syndrome, and Meares-Irlen Syndrome. This condition is not recognized by any professional medical organizations.

The tinted lenses are supposed to filter out some light wavelengths to help the client read.

Most of the evidence for tinted glasses is not credible and the studies have significant methodological flaws.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and the American Association of Certified Orthoptists all warned against the use of these lenses due to lack of scientific evidence.

ASLL Recommendation: Not recommended.
